Indoor vs Outdoor Clay Shooting
Indoor shooting environments can offer a controlled introduction to shooting, with predictable surroundings and shelter from the weather. But for many shooters, it is the outdoor experience that makes clay shooting so enjoyable. The changing landscape, open air, variety of targets and natural surroundings all become part of the challenge.
At Thimbleby Shooting Ground in North Yorkshire, the setting is more than just a backdrop. With 19 outdoor stands, a wide variety of target presentations and the North Yorkshire countryside around you, every round can feel different.
What is the difference between indoor and outdoor shooting?
Indoor shooting facilities can provide a useful environment for learning the fundamentals of shooting. The conditions are controlled, distractions are limited and the focus can be firmly on developing technique.
However, once you step onto an outdoor shooting ground, you have to respond to the environment around you. The landscape changes from stand to stand, targets can appear at different heights and angles, and the same shooting technique does not necessarily work for every presentation. That variety is one of the reasons outdoor clay pigeon shooting remains such an engaging sport.
19 outdoor shooting stands at Thimbleby
Our outdoor course has 19 numbered stands, with a simple difficulty system designed to help shooters choose targets that suit their experience and ability. This makes the ground suitable for a broad range of shooters, from someone picking up a shotgun for the first time to experienced shots looking for something more demanding.

Different stands, different challenges
What makes an outdoor shooting ground particularly interesting is that every stand can ask something different of you.
At Thimbleby, our sporting targets include a variety of presentations designed to replicate the different flight paths and challenges you might encounter in the field.
A crossing partridge tests your ability to read the line and speed of the target, while a bolting rabbit presents an entirely different challenge as the clay travels low across the ground.
We also have a variety of Sportrap targets around the ground, adding another dimension to an outdoor shooting session.
The result is a course where you cannot simply rely on one successful technique. You have to observe, adapt and think about each target before you shoot.
Why the North Yorkshire setting matters
There is also something to be said for the experience of shooting outdoors in the countryside.
Thimbleby Shooting Ground is set in North Yorkshire, close to Northallerton and on the edge of the North York Moors. Here, the surrounding landscape becomes part of the experience.
A bright summer morning can make for a completely different experience to a crisp autumn day. Wind, light and changing conditions can all influence how a target looks and how you approach it.

Outdoor clay shooting for beginners

At Thimbleby, our instructors work with beginners to introduce the fundamentals of clay shooting, explain the safety procedures and help you understand how to approach different targets. Starting on easier stands allows you to build confidence before progressing to more challenging targets.
More than just clay shooting
Alongside clay shooting, the ground offers shooting lessons, competitions, simulated game shooting and an air rifle range, with the clubhouse and café providing somewhere to relax before or after your time on the course.
For groups and events, the outdoor setting also creates an experience that feels very different from a traditional indoor activity.
